Andante in Pink

----Created by Tracy Qian

Andante in Pink is a “pandemic baby.” It is a project that I created, played, recorded, and edited entirely by myself in 2020. In this project, I performed both the solo and the orchestra reduction parts of the second movement of Scriabin’s Piano Concerto Op. 20 on the piano. The two parts were recorded and edited together, and a light show was added to the performance. The color choices for the light show were based on Scriabin’s color scheme and my personal preferences.

This project was inspired by Scriabin’s symphonic work Prometheus: The Poem of Fire, Op. 60, in which he is credited with being the first to incorporate a color organ into a symphonic work. He referred to the color organ as the Tastiera per luce. The "luce" part appears at the top of the orchestral score and is polyphonic with two voices, still written in standard musical notation with a treble clef. The colors associated with the keys are based on Scriabin’s color scheme.

The goal of Andante in Pink is to help me and others experience this movement from a different perspective. For example, to express dynamic and harmonic changes in the music, the colored lights can enhance the performance through variations in luminosity and color. Ultimately, whether visual, aural, olfactory, gustatory, or tactile, these elements serve as bridges connecting the external world with our inner experiences.

Apparatus to Play the Color Music

The connections between music and colors dated back to ancient Greek, when Aristotle stated in his De Sensu that ‘We may regard all colors as analogous to the sounds that enter into music.’ He also believed that there must be a correlation between the sound HZ and the color spectrum, just like the musical scales and the rainbow colors......

Color Notation

Besides the apparatus of combining colors and music, there are many color notations in history as well. In the tenth century, a horizontal red line was drawn to represent the pitch F while a yellow line was added to indicate the pitch C.....
